$100K Google Ads Account Takeover: Audit Checklist Before Rebuilding

Taking over an established Google Ads account with a $100,000 monthly budget? If CPA is rising and ROAS is declining, the temptation to create a new campaign structure is understandable. Yet a wholesale rebuild is not a diagnostic strategy. Before touching the account, identify what changed, what still works and which parts of the customer journey are underperforming.

At AARSWEBS Solutions Co LLC, we recommend a measured account-transition process: audit, measurement validation, prioritization, controlled improvement and, only where justified, restructuring.

Why an Immediate Google Ads Rebuild Can Be Risky

A full restructure may interrupt high-performing segments, change traffic allocation, complicate comparisons and introduce new bid-strategy adjustments. This is not because Google Ads completely forgets account history: Google explains that Smart Bidding uses both new and historical conversion data. The risk is making major changes without evidence about what caused declining business performance.

Google Ads Account Takeover: 10-Point Audit Checklist

1. Confirm the business goal, margin and true target CPA/ROAS

Agree on what counts as a win: qualified leads, booked appointments, revenue, contribution margin or customer lifetime value. A reported ROAS target is not automatically a profitable target.

2. Establish an objective baseline

Compare the last 30, 90, 180 and, when available, 365 days, adjusting for seasonality and conversion lag. Analyze campaigns, products, regions, devices and conversion actions independently.

3. Inspect Google Ads Change History

Identify the timing of budget, bid, audience, keyword, conversion-goal, creative and campaign edits. Correlate them with performance shifts rather than assuming one change caused the decline. Google Ads Change History documentation explains the available review tools.

4. Audit GA4, GTM and Google Ads conversions

Verify purchase values, lead events, deduplication, primary goals, enhanced conversions where relevant, tags and attribution. Make sure the automated bidding system is optimizing for meaningful actions rather than duplicate or low-value events.

5. Review query quality and wasted spend

Examine search terms, match types, negative keywords, irrelevant geographic traffic and underperforming combinations. Protect productive search demand instead of blindly pausing everything.

6. Audit bidding strategies and budgets

Check whether target CPA or target ROAS is achievable, whether budgets constrain profitable campaigns, and whether small campaign segments lack enough conversions. Avoid frequent, unnecessary target swings.

7. Review ad quality and assets

Inspect messaging, responsive search ad coverage, sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets and applicable image, location and other assets. Test value propositions with a clear hypothesis.

8. Investigate landing pages and CRO

Check search intent alignment, mobile performance, page speed, forms, checkout, service-area relevance and trust signals. A weak landing page can make a seemingly healthy click-through rate meaningless.

9. Check the competitive and commercial context

Review auction trends alongside product prices, inventory, delivery promises, promotions, customer reviews and competitor offers. Ad account structure cannot compensate for a materially weaker market proposition.

10. Build a controlled action plan

Separate urgent measurement fixes from experiments and structural changes. Define impact, priority, owner, target metric and review period for each recommendation.

When Should You Actually Restructure Campaigns?

Restructuring may be appropriate when distinct locations, product economics or business objectives require different budgets, ads or landing pages; when legacy setup creates serious operational limitations; or when conversion data and reporting need a better design.

However, dividing a large campaign into ten smaller ones purely because there are ten cities can reduce data density and create unnecessary overhead. Choose segmentation only if performance differences, business requirements and conversion volume justify it. In other cases, consolidation can be more effective.

Our Recommended Transition Plan

  1. Audit and preserve: Document account settings, access, campaigns, conversion actions and profitable segments.
  2. Repair and optimize: Address tracking errors, clear waste, messaging gaps and landing-page friction.
  3. Test changes: Roll out targeted adjustments in selected campaigns with meaningful measurement windows.
  4. Scale what works: Expand successful tests or introduce revised structures when supported by the data.

Evaluation should account for conversion delay and volume. Do not assume every strategy must stabilize after a fixed number of days.

What a Professional Google Ads Audit Should Deliver

A useful audit is not a list of scores. It should explain what is wrong, why it matters, the evidence behind each finding, the recommended fix, and the order in which the fixes should be tested. The result should let the business distinguish tracking problems from traffic issues and conversion-rate problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I create an entirely new Google Ads account when changing agencies?

Usually not just because an agency relationship ends. Review the advertiser’s ownership and access rights, maintain continuity where possible, and remove the old agency’s access once transition steps are complete. A new account is not a shortcut for avoiding policy restrictions.

Can an audit improve a declining ROAS?

An audit can identify plausible causes and actionable opportunities, but it does not guarantee higher ROAS or a particular CPA.

Is a free audit the same as free campaign repairs?

No. Our free Google Ads audit identifies issues and recommended priorities. Implementation, tracking fixes and ongoing management are quoted separately.
